The American Legion Post 60 in Henderson NC recognized that Henderson was one of largest communities in the State that didn’t have any type of veterans’ memorial. This created an intense desire to have a veteran’s memorial, centrally located in our community, that would provide a place of solitude where people could go to pay their respect and appreciation for those who have served our country. The memorial will also be a place used by veterans and civic organizations along with citizen groups to hold ceremonies and reflect.
To bring this dream to reality, it was decided to form the Vance County Veterans Memorial Foundation to lead the administrative and fund-raising aspects of the project. Being a new foundation, we were extremely fortunate to have the Vance County Historical Society come along beside and partner with us on the fund-raising component of the project. Originally, for the first few months, we were able to use their tax-exempt status until we received our own 501 (C)(3) designation from the IRS.
It is now official...we have received our own designation as a 501 (C)(3) non-profit organization. The IRS Determination Letter is available upon request.

Thanks to the support and generosity of Henderson City Council, we were granted authority to construct the Memorial in the heart of the downtown area of the City. The monument will be constructed directly in front of the Henderson Police Department, right across the street from the McGregor Hall Performing Arts Center.

The memorial, as shown in the concept drawing, will be constructed of six polished granite panels, nine feet in height, organized in the form of a Hexagon. There is one panel for each branch of service along with a bronze eagle perched on top. In addition, there will be a separate granite panel depicting the names of all of those from Vance County NC, that were killed in action while serving our country

It is our goal to have the memorial completed in time to host the ceremony celebrating our Nation’s 250-year birthday on July 4th, 2026.
The estimated cost of the project is $150,000 to be paid for in four installments throughout the construction process.
What we need now to see this dream become a reality, is your financial support.
